“Chatham is on the way back up!”

John Lyall Architects ‘ regeneration scheme for Chatham’s waterfront has been awarded Planning Permission this week at public committee.

The mixed-use scheme on land owned by Medway Council and A2Dominion comprises a series of buildings in a pedestrianised landscape for commercial uses, an 80-bed hotel and 111 apartments with both river and town views. The development will re-define the sky-line of Chatham when seen across the river Medway from Rochester, integrate the public waterfront with the town centre and kick start the regeneration of the wider area.

The project was passed unanimously, having received widespread approval from the planning committee.  Councillors remarked that the scheme  was “fresh and forward looking” and  ”vibrant”, and that it “will assist considerably in the regeneration” of the town - “Chatham is on the way back up!”

Work is fast progressing on our Eagle Court project for the Goldsmiths:

The primary function of the Centre is to provide post-graduate education, business start-up studio space, business skills tuition and support for young goldsmiths, plus craft skills training to pre-apprentice silversmiths close to Hatton Garden, the traditional home of the trade in London. The development comprises a new building – predominantly clad in limestone with  panels of patinated brass – and an adapted Grade Listed II Victorian School. The two distinct elements are linked by a glazed atrium. As well as the core educational facilities, the centre provides commercial workshop space, a large exhibition area, seminar space, a cafe and offices.

John Lyall Architects’ new Chatham Waterfront Development was unveiled to the public for the first time last Thursday, in a public exhibition of the design as it currently stands, ahead of a detailed planning application:

Over the course of the day the exhibition was visited by many locals interested to hear about the new development, and how it will change Chatham. Currently this large stretch of riverside land is used as car parks, and our proposals will revitalise the whole area with the introduction of new housing, public spaces and cafes. The feedback was really postive, and everyone appreciated the chance to put forward their views – which were really useful to us as we continue to develop the design over the coming weeks!

John Lyall Architects are getting ready for the public exhibition next week of our Chatham Waterfront Development, ahead of a detailed planning application:

The project – designed by John Lyall Architects for A2Dominion and Medway Renaissance – will include retail and residential uses grouped around new public spaces between Medway Street and the Waterfront Park. The scheme responds to the character and landscape of Chatham’s waterfront and will provide views to the River Medway from within and the existing fabric of the city.

This project, for Thames Water, comprised a masterplanning and detailed feasibility study for the comprehensive redevelopment of a former operational site.  The study proposed around 100 new apartments superimposed over new commercial and retail uses facing the main high street.

Having won Project of the Year and Best Regeneration Project in the East of England RICS awards back in May, we were entered into the RICS National Finals, which took place at lunch today in the splendid setting of Londons Guild Hall:

We didn’t win one of the coveted national awards, but it was great to be there, and to have The Mill recognised as one of the best examples of urban regeneration in the UK!

The Mill comprises a family of buildings centred on a courtyard and includes a 23 storey tower (the tallest building in East Anglia.) The scheme is a mixture of 327 residential apartments, a major dance house and theatre, bars, restaurants and shops.
