John Lyall will be speaking at this Thursdays CIRIA seminar in London entitled ’Raising the bar to deliver sustainable civil engineering’.
The event will discuss the future of sustainability in the infrastructure sector, looking in depth at a number of best practice projects – including JLAs Pudding Mill Lane Pumping station, which recently won a CEEQUAL Outstanding Achievement Award for excellence in sustainability.

Polyark II : The Railway Project came to a triumphant end recently, as students from 8 UK universities descended on Westminster to take part in the ’Supermegacrit’!
Westminster University's impressive P3 space was the scene for the 'Supermegacrit'
The afternoon/evening event involved student presentations interwoven with talks by renowned architects, and was the culmination of a year long collaborative project between these geographically distant but like-minded architecture schools. The project even involved group work and reviews on train carriages as they sped their way across the UK rail network! This reflected the pioneering theories of architecture legend Cedric Price and his original Polyark.
John Lyall telling the story of Cedric Price and his education vision
Polyark II was the brainchild of John Lyall, who wanted to create a kind of living architectural memorial for his old friend and mentor Cedric.
Polyark II will continue next year, so watch this space! And if your university would like to get involved please do get in touch with us!

Rob Scott of John Lyall Architects was one of the main speakers at the Be2Camp Education conference in London last week, explaining how JLA use Web 2.0 and Social Media in our work, and describing how he uses it to teach first year architecture students at The University of Nottingham .

The conference was held on a snowy late November afternoon at the offices of solicitors Maxwell Winward, and provided really useful insights into several aspects of education.
John Lyall will be presenting an online webinar on Enabling London 2012: The Olympic Infrastructure at the upcoming ‘Infrastructure Now’ conference – free to attend online.
John will talk about John Lyall Architects role in the design of the London Olympics infrastructure, including our Pudding Mill Lane pumping station and the family of three other pumping stations on and around the Olympic Park:

The talk – free to attend virtually – takes place at 10am on 23rd September – click here for more details. Also presenting as part of this discussion will be:
Simon Wright, director of infrastructure and utilities, ODA
and
Mike McNicholas, project director for London 2012, Atkins
John Lyall gave a talk today at the New London Architecture seminar “Designing Londons Waste and Energy Facilities”
The talk was followed by an audience of about 200 people, and it was really interesting to hear their comments and questions at the end - people are really starting to think about this fast moving area of our built environment.
Many of the new buildings discussed at the event will convert waste into energy, and are therefore really important and very green initiatives… but such Energy and Waste buildings can be huge! The focus of Johns presentation was that although such projects are very much engineering-led functional schemes, with careful thought they can still enhance their local environment. The slides (shown below) discuss the four pumping stations that John Lyall Architects have designed around the Olympic Park. These important infrastructure buildings have added to the infrastructure work of JLA.
