“The Mill” comprises a family of buildings centred on a courtyard and includes a 23 storey tower (the tallest building in East Anglia.) The scheme is a mixture of 327 residential apartments, a major dance house and theatre (see Jerwood Dance) bars, restaurants and shops.
This is a new purpose-built dance house  for the regional agency, Dance East. The building includes four dance studios, one of which can be used for performances with flexible seating. The Arts council- funded project also includes changing facilities, physio/pilates rooms, offices, foyer and a restaurant facing the waterfront.
Some quotes:

“It is evident that Cranfield Mill is qualitatively as well as quantitatively, head and shoulders above any other development along the harbourside

Jan-Carlos Kucherak, RIBA Journal, November 2009

“On the face of it, what Lyall has achieved here is quite incredible. This is genuine mixed-use waterfront regeneration, and I know of no other scheme that has matched a significant arts organisation with speculative housing”

“This raises two points: the first is that British Architects, or at least John Lyall Architects, have excellent technical capabilities regardless of what material they work with; the second is that they are re-writing the rules regarding the meaning of materiality”

“And so to the tower, which I find quite beautiful – it has the allure of graphic design. Views form the countryside east of Ipswich conjure another powerful image: a 21st century cathedral rising high above the hillocks and trees

Rory Olcayto, Architects Journal, October 2009

“…we chose the redevelopment of the former Cranfield’s Mill on Ipswich Waterfront, as Project of the Year, because the project required considerable courage on the part of the developers and great persistence by John Lyall Architects. The result is a landmark building for Ipswich.”

Award Judges summing-up -  Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors 2010

“John Lyall’s skilful matchmaking between site, funding and occupier enriches a waterfront development in Ipswich – and offers lessons in practice in hard times”

Sarah Wigglesworth, Architecture Today February 2010

John Lyall was a guest on the Radio 4 programme You and Yours recently, in a programme discussing the idea of new towns designed and built by ‘big brands’.

Tesco homes – whatever next? Would you buy a home built by one of your favourite brands as a lifestyle choice?

John Lyall gave a talk today at the New London Architecture seminar “Designing Londons Waste and Energy Facilities”

The talk was followed by an audience of about 200 people, and it was really interesting to hear their comments and questions at the end - people are really starting to think about this fast moving area of our built environment.

Many of the new buildings discussed at the event will convert waste into energy, and are therefore really important and very green initiatives… but such Energy and Waste buildings can be huge! The focus of Johns presentation was that although such projects are very much engineering-led functional schemes, with careful thought they can still enhance their local environment. The slides (shown below) discuss the four pumping stations that John Lyall Architects have designed around the Olympic Park. These important infrastructure buildings have added to the infrastructure work of JLA.
